BERWICK, Maine — A firefighter died Friday after succumbing to injuries he sustained while battling an apartment blaze, according to officials.
Maine Public reported that Berwick Fire Department Captain Joel Barnes was helping battle a multi-alarm apartment fire and was on the third floor with another firefighter when they were met with a wall of flames, according to Maine Public Safety spokesperson Steve McCausland.
"Both men had to be rescued by other firefighters," McCausland said.
Barnes and four other injured firefighters were transported to the hospital, where Barnes later died.
"In addition to the second man down on the third floor there were three other firefighters that were injured. All four of those injured fire fighters have now been treated and released."
