Requirements: The City of South San Francisco (estimated population 65,000) is located on the west shore of the San Francisco Bay, in northern San Mateo County, 10 miles south of San Francisco. The City is currently seeking a Fire Marshal. A highly energetic, strongly motivated individual with excellent leadership skills and the ability to deal effectively with the sometimes challenging and highly charged environment of fire protection and building safety is being sought. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, who is able to work independently and demonstrates a proactive approach to resolving issues before conflicts arise. The incumbent will demonstrate the ability to coach and mentor staff and assist business leaders to understand the bigger picture and work collegially to define and deliver key solutions and results. The incumbent will establish relationships and work cooperatively with City Council, City staff, the public and various other stakeholders. He or she will be someone who consistently demonstrates sound professional judgment, reasons logically, and takes a strategic approach to problem-solving. Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. Typically, a Bachelorís degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil or structural engineering, fire science, fire prevention or protection, or a closely related field; satisfactory completion of any three courses in the California State Fire Training Certification for Fire Marshal; possession of a Fire Prevention Officer II Certificate, State Fire Marshal; and five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in fire protection, design review, or municipal code enforcement including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity, would qualify. A valid California Driverís License and a satisfactory driving record is required as well as possession of a Section 832 Penal Code, State of California Ė non-firearm certification within one year from date of employment.
