What steps should I take to becoming a Firefighter? There are 3 things that firefighter candidates should do to prepare themselves for a fulltime career. These three things can & should be done simultaneously. A) Get Involved - Check with your local fire departments & inquire about cadet, volunteer, reserve or paid call opportunities. Many departments offer programs to gain experience if you’re willing to volunteer your time. This is the best way to gain hands on experience, get known in your area & start building your resume. Whenever you’re in contact with fire department personnel be conscious of your appearance & demeanor. It is important to make a good first impression & maintain that impression by always being courteous, professional, positive, humble & mature. B) Get Educated & Certified - You should also look into taking fire science courses at a local community college, or at least a CPR & Basic First Aid course through your local American Red Cross or American Heart Association. An EMT certificate & Firefighter I certificate are also very important & are minimum requirements for many departments. An Associates Degree in Fire Science from a Community College will make you a more desirable candidate & show your dedication & commitment to the career. The demand for Paramedics in the fire service has increased dramatically over the past decade. If you have an interest in EMS the opportunities for you as a Paramedic are much greater. C) Start Testing - The third thing you can do is start applying for any & all fire department exams that you qualify for. Even if it is in an area you don’t desire to work, the testing experience is invaluable & will prepare you for upcoming exams. Each exam & testing process will better prepare you for the next one.
